2016 Highlights

Ontario Magazines took top honours at the 39th National Magazine Awards (NMA)

Congratulations to all the Ontario and OMDC-supported magazines who collected awards.
Maclean’s won a Gold Medal for Best Magazine Cover, alongside two other Gold awards; The Walrus topped the leader board with four Gold and three Silver Medals, and Toronto Life earned three Gold and one Silver.

Other highlights included writer Desmond Cole as the top individual winner of the evening (three medals), winning a Gold Medal for Best New Magazine Writer and Silver Medals in Essays and in Personal Journalism for his stirring essay "The Skin I'm In," about police discrimination against black men, published in Toronto Life. The piece also won an Honourable Mention in Politics & Public Interest. Illustrator Jillian Tamaki won her fifth National Magazine Award with a Gold Medal in Words & Pictures, for "Our Ever-Changing Moods", The Walrus. Astronaut Chris Hadfield won a National Magazine Award in an honourary fashion: Chris Hadfield was the guest editor of Maclean's "Space Issue," which won the NMA Gold Medal for Editorial Package.

Winners of the 62nd Annual Canadian Business Media Awards

The CBM Awards recognize the outstanding editorial efforts of business-to-business media content. Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards were presented in 21 written, visual, integrated and special categories during the gala at the Grand Banking Hall at One King West in Toronto, hosted by D.B. Scott, president of Impresa Communications.

Congratulations to OMDC-supported Precedent magazine for winning Best Media Brand. The CBM Jury had this to say: “Precedent takes an insider’s stance and targets a younger audience hungry for more accessible content. They serve it up through multiple channels in a really consistent way. Its cheeky tone, voice and visual expression challenge conventional legal media.”

Precedent also picked up a Gold and Silver for Best Art Direction of a Complete Issue, and a Silver for Art Direction of an Opening Spread/Complete Feature. Advisor’s Edge, published by Rogers and also OMDC-supported, picked up a Gold for Best In-House Cover and Silver for Best Professional Article.
