Ontario Investing in Interactive Digital Media Sector - Province Increasing Support for Interactive Digital Media Fund

On March 8, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Michael Coteau announced that Ontario invested $6 million through the Interactive Digital Media Fund to support 52 companies focused on building a vibrant digital media industry, creating jobs and growing the economy.

Minister Michael Coteau made the announcement at marblemedia, an award-winning content creation company at the forefront of television and digital media production. marblemedia is receiving $120,000 from the Interactive Digital Media Fund to support the production of their mobile game, Splatalot Attack!

Beginning in 2016, the province will increase support for the Interactive Digital Media Fund to $10 million. The 2016-17 program, which started accepting applications today, will also be more flexible, with new funding streams to support a wider variety of projects, including publishing businesses and marketing support.

OMDC’s IDM Fund Showcase Celebrating 10 Years of Success!

To highlight and celebrate a decade of the Interactive Digital Media Fund, OMDC hosted the IDM Showcase on February 25, 2016 at Daniels Spectrum. As OMDC CEO Karen Thorne-Stone illuminated in her remarks, the IDM Fund has invested more than $25 million in the sector over the past 10 years, stimulating production and creating jobs. Ontario’s IDM sector is now Canada’s largest; employing 16,000 people and generating revenues of almost $1.5 billion.

Fourteen IDM Fund recipients displayed and demoed their products, showing off the range of the interactive industry, from educational apps (Breezin’ Through Theory) to online magazines (Beauty Desk), web series (Space Janitors), a children’s story app (Loose Strands), and a whole gamut of games (Below, Planet of the Eyes, N++ and more).

OMDC Promoting 33 Ontario Game Companies at GDC!

Ontario game developers had a large presence at the annual Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, March 14-18, 2016. OMDC supported 33 companies to attend the event via the Export Fund, ran a booth for demos of IDM funded games in the indie developer space GDC Play, and hosted an evening networking event with over 200 attendees for Ontario companies and their business contacts from the industry.

Fifteen companies set-up demos in the OMDC GDC Play booth, including: Big Viking Games, XMG, SHG, Game Pill and more.

Ontario companies and their key players were featured as speakers and included in the programming at this year’s GDC including: Drinkbox Studios, Metanet Software, Capybara Games and several people from the Dames Making Games collective to name a few.

Rocket 5 and Phantom Compass also participated in a pitch competition on the Floor of GDC Play.

Many Ontario Companies have informally reported great success showing their games to publishers behind closed doors. We look forward to their continued success.
