The Fifth Annual PLT Co-Pro Forum Between Canadian, European, Australian, and New Zealand Film Producers

The fifth edition of Producers Lab Toronto (PLT) was presented by the OMDC together with European Film Promotion (EFP) and the Toronto International Film Festival® (TIFF) from September 3rd to 6th, 2014. PLT brought 10 Canadian and 10 European feature film producers together with four producers from guest countries Australia and New Zealand.

The three-day forum included pitching sessions, one-on-one meetings, panels and case studies. The goal of the program is to generate business relationships leading to international co-productions, and to increase the visibility of the producers and their projects during TIFF.

In addition to an intense round of one-on-one meetings, sessions at PLT 2014 included an in-depth case study of David Cronenberg’s TIFF Gala presentation Maps to the Stars with producer Marty Katz; an overview of Canadian international co-production with entertainment lawyer Ken Dhaliwal; a Meet the Canadian Funders panel with OMDC’s CEO and President Karen Thorne-Stone and OMDC’s Director of Tax Credits Jennifer Blitz, Telefilm’s Head of National Feature Film Stephanie Azam, and Melanie Muncaster, Manager Program Services of the NOHFC; and Funding Down Under with Dave Gibson, CEO of New Zealand Film Commission and Graeme Mason, CEO of Screen Australia.

These briefings came into focus when Len Pendergast, President of Global Incentives, led the PLT group through a series of case funding scenarios that illustrated possible co-production strategies for the participant’s projects. Producers were also welcomed to a tour of Toronto production locations by Acting OMDC Manager of Film, Janice Reid Johnston; Toronto Film Commissioner and Director, Entertainment Industries Zaib Shaikh; and Eric Jensen, Manager of the Toronto Film, Television and Digital Media Office, with a stop at Pinewood Studios’ Mega Stage. Finally new distribution strategies were contemplated with an exclusive preview from VIMEO executive Peter Gerard.

“Producers Lab Toronto was a terrific program and a wonderful experience”, said producer Henning Kamm of Detail Film, Germany. “It was a great mix of people and I'm sure we won't be waiting long to collaborate together. I'm looking forward to being back in Toronto for the production of Mohammad Rasoulof's new movie Mahan as soon as possible.”

Producers Lab Toronto was organized by the OMDC, EFP, and TIFF in partnership with Screen Australia (SA) and the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC). The event is made possible with the financial support from the participating EFP member organizations, and additionally from Telefilm Canada, Eurimages, Creative BC and Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia.
