Bucking the Trend - Ontario's Thriving
Creative Industries

On February 7, 2012, OMDC President and CEO, Karen Thorne-Stone spoke to over 200 government, industry, academic and media leaders at the Economic Club of Canada about how Ontario’s thriving creative industries are Bucking the Trend and experiencing growth and making a significant contribution to both culture and our economy in difficult economic times.

The Ontario Media Development Corporation is leading the way to ensure that Ontario’s book and magazine publishing, music, interactive digital media, and film and television production industries continue to prosper. Ontario’s entertainment and creative industries are responsible for contributing a staggering $12.2 billion dollars to the province’s GDP each year. That is big business. The creative industries are bigger than each of the Mining, Agriculture & Forestry, and Energy sectors. And better yet, they are growing. Between 2000 and 2007 Ontario’s creative industries grew 38% where the rest of economy grew only 17%.

Karen Thorne-StoneOMDC’s President and CEO, Karen Thorne-Stone announced that Ontario’s film and television industry recorded its best year ever in 2011 contributing $1.26 billion to the provincial economy – a $300 million increase or 31% over the previous year – according to statistics compiled by the Ontario Media Development Corporation It was the strongest performance since 2000 ($1.01 billion) and the highest since the agency started keeping records in 1986. The $1.26 billion in production activity accounted for almost 30,000 full-time direct and spin-off jobs.
