2015 Highlights

 

Toronto Hosted FIPP World Congress

Toronto was the proud host of this world-class biennial event, produced by FIPP, the worldwide magazine media association, in partnership with Magazines Canada (with support from OMDC).

Previously hosted in cities such as Rome, New York, Mumbai and London, the Congress is dedicated to bringing together publishers, large and small, from all around the world.

Speakers and delegates were from companies spanning the world (US, Japan, Germany, France, South Africa and Canada, to name only a few) and included household names such as Hearst, Conde Nast, Burda International, Buzzfeed, and National Geographic.

Speakers and panelists from Spacing, Rogers, House & Home and Annex Business Media provided an Ontario perspective on the evolving magazine media industry.  Favouring short but deep sessions, and many networking opportunities, the atmosphere was energetic and positive. Presentations were notable for the honesty of the speakers in sharing critical currency of what is working and, importantly, what isn’t.

Upbeat, capacity events bookended the Congress, with the opening night party taking place at the Evergreen Brickworks, and the closing event at Ripley’s Aquarium and the CN Tower, with a set by jazz legend Molly Johnson.

Ontario Magazines took top honours at the National Magazine Awards (NMA)

Cottage Life won Best Magazine Brand, a new category celebrating a magazine brand that ‘best delivers on their editorial mandate through at least three platforms’.

Precedent, AZURE, Toronto Life (2 Gold Awards), The Walrus (4 Gold Awards!), Maclean’s (3 Gold Awards) were the OMDC-supported publications winning Gold Awards. A full list of winners can be found here.

Michael Fox named the recipient of the 2015 NMAF Outstanding Achievement Award

Publisher, circulator and magazine industry leader Michael Fox was the recipient of the 2015 Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. Michael is the publisher of OMDC-supported Garden Making magazine and member of OMDC’s Industry Advisory Committee.

 

Content Across Borders - OMDC Magazine Fund Best Practices Panel and Networking Breakfast

On June 5th, Peter Wilmshurst, Publisher of Allergic Living, and Celine MacKay, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Pure Green Magazine, were guests on a panel moderated by OMDC’s Matt Hilliard-Forde. Peter and Celine engaged in an insightful, detailed and candid discussion about how their content is reaching audiences and driving revenue from beyond Canada.

The discussion outlined their differing models and strategies, and included valuable advice on how to expand the reach of content.
