Toronto Hosted FIPP World Congress

Karen Thorne-Stone, CEO and President of OMDC; Chris Llewellyn, FIPP's president and CEO; Douglas Knight, President of St. Joseph Communications’ Media Group and FIPP World Congress co-chair; and Mark Jamison, Magazines Canada’s CEO

Toronto was the proud host of this world-class biennial event, produced by FIPP, the worldwide magazine media association, in partnership with Magazines Canada (with support from OMDC).

Opening Event at the Evergreen Brickworks   OMDC’s James Weyman; Terry Sellwood; OMDC’s Raina Wells, Kristine Murphy and Marina Adam

Previously hosted in cities such as Rome, New York, Mumbai and London, the Congress is dedicated to bringing together publishers, large and small, from all around the world.

Speakers and delegates were from companies spanning the world (US, Japan, Germany, France, South Africa and Canada, to name only a few) and included household names such as Hearst, Conde Nast, Burda International, Buzzfeed, and National Geographic.

Al Zikowitz, President and CEO of Cottage Life Media, presenting the session ‘Thoughts (and evidence) on how to compete in a world where lines between media are increasingly blurred’.   Host Tom Gierasimczuk (L) talks with Mike Fredericks, CEO Annex Business Media, and Jim Glionna, CEO Newcom during the session ‘Partnering to meet the future head on’.

Speakers and panelists from Spacing, Rogers, House & Home and Annex Business Media provided an Ontario perspective on the evolving magazine media industry.  Favouring short but deep sessions, and many networking opportunities, the atmosphere was energetic and positive. Presentations were notable for the honesty of the speakers in sharing critical currency of what is working and, importantly, what isn’t.

Host: John Milne, VP of media services at EquiSoft and president of Breakwell & Company with Lynda Reeves, Founder, president and publisher, House & Home Media in the session ‘Using markets constraints creatively, and how to innovate continually to build a multiplatform media giant’.   Closing event at Ripley’s Aquarium

Upbeat, capacity events bookended the Congress, with the opening night party taking place at the Evergreen Brickworks, and the closing event at Ripley’s Aquarium and the CN Tower, with a set by jazz legend Molly Johnson.

“It was wonderful to be completely immersed in conversation surrounding magazines, and the future of publishing. It's not something you chat to friends in other industries about, and it's even better when you can talk to people who have the desire to grow and learn more (and earn more) from this industry” Hannah Trumper, Azure Publishing Inc.
